Dar-Es-Salaam

There are many reasons to visit Dar-Es-Salaam which is the Trade and Industrial Capital of Tanzania. Dar-Es-Salaam is the main port of call for tourists planning to visit the Southern Circuit, Beach Holiday, Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia etc.....
The City popularly called Dar has its own attractions and thus lots of places to visit.
Dar is the economic capital of Tanzania, with most of the activity surrounding the harbour. This is where dhows, still made in century old tradition, call to drop off their goods, or take new products out to other ports. It is fascinating just to sit and watch them navigate through the myriad of larger cargo ships and cruise liners. Just as interesting is to watch the activities going on in the fish market. It is best not to make any deals with shady looking characters offering you fantastic exchange rates for T.Shillings.
The city is fascinating if you want to see how African business is conducted. A mix of western business styles and the traditional African styles of business can be found all around the streets. The many street vendors show just how entrepreneurial Tanzanian's are.. sometimes too much so when it comes to tourists.
Dar is a treasure-trove for connoisseurs of art . Makonde carvings, TingiTinga paintings, bead, bone and malachite jewellery, basketry, spices, colourfull wrap-arounds called 'kanga' and 'kitenge', batik and brassware are most popular and excellent buys. The rare and brilliant Tanzanite gemstone found only in Tanzania, makes a precious souvenier.
